Low Back Pain In Cincinnati
There are many different sources of back pain such as: Muscle strain, muscle spasm, herniated disc, osteoarthritis, and irritated nerves are common causes of back pain. Sciatica is a back pain that is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and begins in the lower back, goes through the pelvic area and down the back of the leg. Sciatica is pain that starts in the lower back and runs down the back of the leg that may also cause numbness, tingling or weakness in the back and legs.
A herniated disc typically occurs in the lumbar spine, and is located between the ribs and the hips on the spinal column. Discs are the cushioning materials that help move and protect the spine. Also known as a slipped or ruptured disc, a herniated disc may cause painful inflammation and can press on or pinch nerves in the spine. The elderly seem to have a higher occurrence of herniated disc because of the natural aging process of these cushions in the spine. Osteoarthritis is also a more frequent problem that causes back pain in elderly people, particularly those sixty and older and manifests itself as a dull ache in the back when getting out of bed in the morning. Osteoarthritis also deteriorates the joint cartilage, another type of cushion, between bones.
Some people are born with conditions of the spine that lead to painful diseases like scoliosis, an abnormal curve in the spine, which causes pain and predisposes the patient to developing early osteoarthritis, herniated discs and pinched nerves.
Back pain can differ depending on the reason for the discomfort and the individual’s sensitivity to pain. It can manifest as a burning feeling, dull ache or pain, a sharp pain, can cause pain or tingling in the legs and can vary in location from a centralized location to a more widespread area of the back. It can be acute pain that comes on suddenly and lasts for only a few days or weeks, or it can be more chronic and starting gradually and last for several months or years. Acute back pain may occur after a fall or after lifting something that is too heavy and last only a few days, where acute pain may stop for a while and then return over time.
Back problems may cause acute or chronic pain. Acute back pain is temporary pain that begins suddenly and lasts for only a few days or a few weeks. Acute back pain can happen after lifting something heavy or twisting the back, such as from slipping and falling. Back pain may become noticeable gradually over time. Both chronic and acute back pain can be mild to severe and in the upper or lower area of the back.
